Day Hochman-Vigil: Building A Stronger New Mexico

"I will always stand up for New Mexico families as we work toward building a stronger New Mexico together. I will fight to make health care more affordable & accessible, address inflation and affordability, support our small businesses, help foster economic development, and work tirelessly to preserve our climate & unique New Mexico culture and communities."

Day Hochman-Vigil,

State Representative, District 15

Representative Day Hochman-Vigil has served in the New Mexico House of Representatives since first elected in 2018. She represents the residents of House District 15, which encompasses Albuquerque’s beautiful North Valley and the Village of Los Ranchos. A proud local resident and experienced policymaker, she has dedicated her time in office standing up for New Mexico’s working families and delivering proven results.

As House Majority Whip, member of the house Judiciary Committee, and former Chair of the House Transportation Committees, Day plays a leading role in shaping critical legislation that impacts families across the state. She has worked to make healthcare more affordable, protect those with preexisting conditions from losing health care, prevent gun violence, raise the minimum wage, strengthen economic opportunity, and build a fairer tax system. Day has prioritized leading the state in the development of smart infrastructure and modernizing and expanding our power grid to meet New Mexico's aggressive decarbonization goals.

Fighting to Improve Access to Healthcare

Day understands that it takes too long to see a medical provider and that access to health care must be a priority for the legislature. She fought for legislation to exempt medical services from gross receipts taxes, a move praised by clinics and providers alike for improving affordability and patient access.

Her work also includes expanding Medicaid parity for birth centers,  improving behavioral health infrastructure, and expanding New Mexico's harm reduction program to reduce drug-related deaths and disease transmission. She even helped authorize ride-share coverage for non-emergency medical transport so Medicaid patients can actually get to their appointments.

Keeping Our Communities Safe

Day played a key role in passing the bipartisan 2025 public safety package: an aggressive, multifaceted plan to address crime at its roots. The package increases penalties for fentanyl distribution, car theft, and DWI, reforms criminal competency standards, and bans the use of devices that convert firearms into automatic weapons.

She also secured final funding for Albuquerque’s Real-Time Crime Center, which has already saved lives on several occasions, and led the effort in the House of Representatives to establish a permanent Behavioral Health Trust Fund, which will ensure long-term support for mental health and addiction treatment statewide.

Investing in Students, Teachers, and the Future

From teacher pay raises to graduate scholarships and career training programs, Day is committed to increasing education outcomes across the state. She supported the $500 million “education moonshot” to reduce class sizes, increase early learning resources, and raise wages for teachers and classroom staff.

In addition, she voted for the Opportunity Scholarship to make college available and free to anybody wishing to pursue a higher education degree, backed legislation to strengthen career technical education in public schools, and expanded scholarship opportunities for underrepresented students pursuing graduate degrees. Her focus is clear: deliver the tools, funding, and policy support our students and educators need to thrive.

Day believes that  government should work for the people it serves. Whether it’s lowering health care costs, protecting families from crime, or investing in the next generation, she brings the same focus and dedication to every issue: listening to her community and delivering meaningful results.
