Priorities

Affordable & Accessible Health Care

Effective health care is essential, so Day has made it one of her top priorities to ensure every New Mexican can access the care they need in a timely manner without going into debt. Her legislation has focused on cost, access, and equity across the health system, including:

  • Sponsoring HB 344, which eliminates gross receipts taxes on healthcare services, one of the top barriers to affordability in New Mexico.
  • Passing HB 56, requiring Medicaid parity for birth centers and expanding access to safe and affordable maternal care.
  • Co sponsoring HB 11, which clarifies medical malpractice protections for outpatient health providers to preserve access.
  • Carrying HB 125 to streamline behavioral health provider licensing to grow our workforce and expand mental health access.
  • Championing HB 75, requiring copay parity for chiropractic care and primary care.
  • Supporting SB 485 to allow ride-share transportation for Medicaid patients, closing the gap between coverage and care.

These reforms reflect Day’s commitment to both protect and improve health outcomes for every community in New Mexico, especially those that are often left behind.

Public Safety and Crime Prevention

New Mexicans deserve to feel safe in their homes, neighborhoods, & parks, and Day is committed to making that a reality. From violent crime to drug trafficking, she understands the complex factors driving public safety challenges and is working everyday to create solutions that are tough, fair, and effective.  She also understands that we must do more to help those who need help to get out of the criminal justice system.

These achievements include:

  • Helping pass a bipartisan public safety package in 2025 that strengthened criminal penalties for fentanyl distribution, DWI, and car theft.
  • Sponsoring legislation that bans devices that convert firearms into automatic weapons.
  • Championing criminal competency law reform to better manage cases involving mental illness.
  • Securing final funding for Albuquerque’s Real-Time Crime Monitoring Center to improve law enforcement coordination.
  • Passing SB 425, requiring all county jails to offer medication-assisted treatment for addiction, improving public health and reducing recidivism.
  • Sponsoring SB 1, which creates a $1 billion Behavioral Health Trust Fund to sustainably fund treatment services for years to come.

Day works closely with public safety officials and community leaders to develop smart, long-term strategies that prevent crime and keep families safe.

Education & Student Opportunity

Education is the foundation of New Mexico’s future, and Day has fought to make sure that both students and educators are given the tools needed to succeed. Whether it’s in the classroom or in the workforce, she’s advancing policies that create real opportunity, including:

  • Helping to pass New Mexico’s $500 million education moonshot to raise teacher pay, reduce class sizes, and expand early childhood education.
  • Sponsoring HB91, a pilot for career technical education that links students to high quality, real world job training.
  • Passing HB 89, which expands eligibility and increases awards under the graduate Scholarship Act to support underrepresented students.

From early learning to graduate level opportunity, Day believes every student deserves a fair shot at a brighter future.

Smart Growth and Economic Development

Day understands that economic resilience requires strategic, long-term planning. She is focused on diversifying our economy, improving infrastructure, and ensuring working families and small businesses are prioritized.

Some of these efforts include:

  • Sponsoring HB 13, the Power Up NM Act, to modernize the state’s power grid and support responsible economic growth through beneficial electrification.
  • Co-sponsoring HB 145, which authorizes up to $1.5 billion in  transportation bonds for roads, bridges, and other necessary infrastructure.
  • Voting to cut taxes for working families and small businesses hit hard by inflation and the pandemic.
  • Supporting legislation banning algorithmic discrimination in consumer finance, housing, and insurance markets to ensure fairness in emerging technology.
  • Passing HB 19, the Trade Ports Development Act, to establish New Mexico as a regional leader in logistics and supply chain strategy.

Day’s focus is clear: give New Mexicans the tools to thrive in a changing economy, while building clean, modern infrastructure that will carry us forward.

Environmental Protection & Infrastructure

Day was raised with a deep respect for the land, water, and culture of New Mexico. Her environmental work focuses on long-term sustainability, rural infrastructure, and public health, including:

  • Sponsoring HB 212 to ban the sale of consumer products with harmful PFAS chemicals and authorizing enforcement rules.
  • Passing HB 240, which allows the NM Finance Authority to issue grants alongside loans for drinking water projects.
  • Helping establish HB 232 to create a new division to streamline rural and tribal infrastructure planning.

She knows the importance of listening to experts, protecting natural resources, and building with climate in mind, with a track record to prove it.

Civil Rights and Social Equity

Day has consistently stood up for the rights of vulnerable New Mexicans, fighting for equal protection under the law and ensuring our systems don’t leave anyone behind. Whether it’s protecting children in state custody or empowering survivors of workplace harassment, she has made equity and accountability central to her legislative work.

Some of these efforts include:

  • Sponsoring HB 5 to establish the Office of Child Advocate to independently investigate complaints and advocate for children in state care.
  • Sponsoring HB 21, which makes nondisclosure agreements unenforceable in cases of workplace harassment and sexual assault.
  • Passing HB 131, expanding background check requirements for caregivers to better protect vulnerable populations in care settings.
  • Carrying SB 425 to ensure addiction treatment access in jails, helping reduce health disparities in the criminal system.
  • Supporting HM 61, which encourages storytelling and trauma informed support for foster youth.

By addressing gaps in care, protection, and representation, she’s helped build a state government that serves not just the powerful, but the people who rely on it most.
